The LA Destiny Center (LADC) was founded in 1988 by Nuoye and Wanda Clemmons. The Clemmons were parents of eight children discouraged with the public education system in Los Angeles and decided to stop cursing the darkness and they lit a Candle of Light in South Los Angeles. Without any formal training, they leased an abandoned bank building, flew eight teachers to Chicago, and were trained by the nationally acclaimed educator Marva Collins.
Upon their return, they started the Marva Collins Educational Facility (MCEF) in South Los Angeles- a K-8th grade private school. But this was just the beginning. In 1991 the Clemmons’ experienced a life-changing conference on God’s Purpose and Destiny and the L A Destiny Center was born. The Clemmons have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The Wave, and the Daily Breeze newspapers. They have also appeared on local television for their work on combating gang violence in Compton, CA. Our president is Dr. Wanda D. Clemmons. Dr. Clemmons has earned two Masters Degree's in Education and Educational leadership and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Ca.
Dr. Clemmons has two foundational pillars she builds on. Every child has God-given gifts when discovered, developed, and deployed will lead them to their DESTINY- Gods Purpose for their Lives and “Children are Great Imitators-Let’s Give them something Great to Imitate.”
The LA Destiny Center has evolved over 30 years to become a nonprofit community service organization that provides educational and social services to underserved children and families. Throughout the years LADC has partnered with the LA County Sheriffs Department and the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots to give toys to needy children during Christmas. LADC has also partnered with the LA Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and The NAACP Image Awards providing inspirational and cultural exposure to underserved youth. Our current programs include Camp Destiny- a STEAM camp focusing on GREEN and Renewable energy in an outdoors real-world classroom located in Sequoia National Forest. Girls and Gentleman of Destiny G.O.D. -a mentoring program focusing on Leadership, College Preparatory, Self-Esteem, and Community Service to underserved youth. And most recently Pedal HEARTer- An Annual Memorial Bike Give-Away and Ride honoring our co-founder Nuoye R. Clemmons Sr. Pedal HEARTer promotes heart health, reducing obesity, and promoting an overall healthy lifestyle in underserved communities.
